R U OK? Day: How Painting Together Opens Conversations · Lily – Be Artistic Club

R U OK? Day is Thursday 11 September 2026. The campaign reminds us that meaningful conversations about mental health start in everyday moments — not formal sit-downs.
A shared paint-by-numbers session is one of the easier ways to create those moments at work, at home, or in an aged care setting.
Why Painting Works
Direct eye contact makes hard conversations feel like interrogations. Side-by-side activity — painting, driving, cooking — lowers that pressure. People talk while their hands are busy.
Paint-by-numbers adds structure (no creative anxiety) and gives the conversation a natural pace.
Running a Session at Work
Block out 90 minutes in a meeting room. Set up small canvases and supplies. Frame it as 'paint together, talk if you want' — never mandatory sharing.
Have R U OK? conversation cards on the table for anyone who wants prompts. Have your EAP details printed and visible.
At Home or in Aged Care
A grandparent and grandchild painting together. A couple painting the same canvas. A small group in residential aged care.
The pattern is the same: shared activity, soft conversation, no one has to perform.
Hard conversations rarely start with 'are you okay?' They start with 'pass me the green' and grow from there. Painting builds that bridge.
